Why Indian Shares Rallied While Wall Street Crashed on AI Worries

Global markets had a dramatic week. On Thursday, 5 November 2026, US stocks fell hard. The Nasdaq dropped about 5.5%, the S&P 500 about 4.4% and the Dow about 3.4%, according to market reports. South Korea's Kospi also fell sharply, by about 6%.

India went the other way. On Friday, 6 November, the Sensex rose 1,718 points, or 2.17%, to close at 81,028.02, and the Nifty 50 gained 2.01% to close at 25,030.35.

Why did US stocks fall?

Reports pointed to worries about the future of artificial intelligence spending. Weak results from the chipmaker Qualcomm added to fears that companies may spend less on AI data centres than investors had hoped. Some analysts also linked the worry to the outcome of the US midterm elections, where Democrats won, and to concerns about opposition to large data centre projects.

Why did Indian markets hold up?

- Less exposure to AI shares: A large part of the Nasdaq and of markets like Taiwan and South Korea depends on AI and chip companies. India's main indices are led by banks, consumer and energy companies, so they were hit less. Analysts quoted in reports said India was likely to be among the least affected markets.
- Money moving towards India: As some global investors pulled money out of AI-linked shares, foreign investors were reported to have bought Indian shares in large amounts.
- Banks led the gains: ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, HDFC Life and Mahindra & Mahindra were among the biggest gainers on the Nifty 50.
- Festival mood: Buying sentiment around Diwali and Dhanteras supported the market.

A word of caution

The rally was narrow. More stocks fell than rose on the day, and smallcap shares ended lower. A strong day for the index does not mean every share went up. Global markets can also turn quickly, so Indian shares are not completely protected from a US sell-off.

What to watch

- Whether US markets recover or fall further next week.
- Whether foreign investors keep buying in India.
- Oil prices and the RBI's December policy meeting.
