Foreign Investors Buy Nearly Rs 15,000 Crore of Indian Shares in One Day: Why They Are Back

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) returned to Indian shares in a big way this week. According to provisional exchange data, FIIs bought a net Rs 14,974.68 crore of shares on Thursday, 5 November 2026. This was their fifth straight session of buying, and they bought about Rs 32,210 crore over the week.

At the same time, domestic institutions (DIIs), such as mutual funds and insurers, sold a net Rs 10,444.54 crore.

The Sensex and Nifty rose nearly 9% over the week, one of their strongest weeks in years, according to market reports.

Why are foreign investors buying?

Market reports gave several reasons:

1. Lower crude oil prices. Oil fell sharply early in the week on hopes that the US-Iran conflict could ease after the US midterm election results. India imports most of its oil, so cheaper crude helps inflation, the rupee and the trade deficit.
2. Lower US bond yields. The US 10-year yield eased to about 4.90%. When US yields fall, emerging markets like India often look more attractive.
3. Money leaving AI-linked markets. As worries grew about AI spending, some investors moved money out of markets like Taiwan and South Korea. India has far fewer AI-linked shares.
4. Improving company earnings. Several reports pointed to better results from Indian companies.
5. Budget hopes. Some reports mentioned talk that long-term capital gains tax could be removed in the coming Budget. This is not confirmed, so treat it as speculation.

What does it mean for you?

- Foreign buying can lift the market, but it can also reverse quickly. Foreign investors had been sellers earlier in the year, so one strong week does not make a trend.
- When domestic funds sell and foreign funds buy, it can mean domestic investors are taking profits after a rally.
- If you invest through a SIP, you do not need to react to daily FII numbers. Keep investing as planned.
