Why Gold Prices Move: 5 Things That Decide the Rate in India
On 2 November 2026, 24-carat gold was about Rs 1,38,970 per 10 grams in India, and silver was about Rs 1,82,010 per kg, according to rates published by StartupTalky. Gold is one of the most watched assets in India, so it helps to know what moves its price.
1. Global gold prices
India imports most of its gold, so the international price, quoted in US dollars per ounce, is the biggest driver. When Comex or London gold goes up, Indian prices usually follow within the day.
2. The rupee against the dollar
Because gold is bought in dollars, a weaker rupee makes it costlier in India even when the global price stays flat. A stronger rupee has the opposite effect.
3. Interest rates
Gold pays no interest. When interest rates are high, bank deposits and bonds look more attractive, and gold can lose some appeal. When rates are cut, gold often gains. This is why central bank decisions, including the RBI's, are watched closely by gold traders.
4. Fear and uncertainty
In wars, banking trouble or sharp falls in the stock market, many investors move money into gold because they see it as a safe place. This demand can push the price up quickly.
5. Import duty, taxes and demand in India
Customs duty and GST are added to the price you pay. Demand also rises around festivals and wedding seasons, which can keep prices firm in India.
How to buy gold in India
- Jewellery: includes making charges, which can be a large extra cost, and the resale value is lower.
- Coins and bars: lower making charges, but check purity and a proper bill.
- Gold ETFs and gold mutual funds: bought in a demat account, no storage worry, and a small yearly fee.
- Digital gold: easy to start with small amounts, but check how the platform is regulated and what its charges are.
What to check before you buy
- Ask for the BIS hallmark on jewellery.
- Compare the price per gram with the day's published rate, and ask for the making charge separately.
- Keep your bill.
- Do not put all your savings in one asset.
