Crude Oil Swings Near $100: Why It Matters for India's Petrol Prices, Rupee and Inflation

Oil prices had a wild week. Brent crude, the global benchmark, fell 8.7% on Wednesday, 4 November, to settle at $94.62 a barrel, its lowest level in about two months. On Friday it bounced back to around $100 after fresh tanker attacks. Even so, Brent was on track for a weekly fall of about 12%.
Why did oil fall, then rise?
- The fall: After the Democrats won in the US midterm elections, hopes rose that the US could move towards ending the war with Iran, which is now in its ninth month. Oil dropped on the hope of peace.
- The rebound: Iran reported three more tanker attacks in the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow sea route that carries a large share of the world's oil. An analyst at ANZ said shipping flows through the strait are still running below 60% of normal. This brought supply fears back.
- Even if peace talks make progress, it can take time to return shipping to normal, so prices may stay jumpy.
Why does this matter for India?
India imports most of the crude oil it uses. That is why oil prices affect so many things:
- Inflation: Costlier oil raises transport and fuel costs, which can push up prices of many goods. Inflation is one of the main things the RBI looks at when deciding interest rates. The RBI raised the repo rate to 5.50% in October.
- The rupee: India pays for oil in dollars. When oil is expensive, India needs more dollars, which can weaken the rupee.
- Petrol and diesel: Retail fuel prices in India do not change every day, and they depend on taxes and government decisions as well as crude prices. A fall in crude does not always mean cheaper petrol at the pump quickly.
- Shares: Lower oil usually helps companies that use a lot of fuel, such as airlines and paint makers, and can be good news for the market as a whole. Oil producers can see the opposite effect.
